IC 5146 Cocoon Nebula
IC 5146, commonly known as the Cocoon Nebula, is a star-forming region that combines features of both a reflection and emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. Like other reflection nebulae, part of its glow comes from starlight scattered by dust, while surrounding gas is also excited to emit light, creating a rich mix of colors around the embedded young cluster. Dense dark lanes of molecular material extend outward from the bright core, giving the region a cocoon-like appearance and highlighting the ongoing birth of new stars within its dusty clouds.
