Dust and gas clouds in the Milky Way
Nebulae in the Milky Way galaxy are vast clouds of gas and dust that play a crucial role in the lifecycle of stars. These astronomical objects vary in size, shape, and composition, but they share several common characteristics:
- Composed primarily of hydrogen, helium, and trace amounts of heavier elements.
- Often serve as stellar nurseries, where new stars are born from collapsing regions of gas and dust.
- Exhibit a range of appearances, including emission nebulae that glow due to ionized gases, reflection nebulae that scatter starlight, and dark nebulae that obscure background stars.
- Can span from a few light-years to hundreds of light-years in diameter.
- Frequently associated with regions of active star formation and supernova remnants.
Nebula pictures are popular with Seestar users because they yield colorful images and some of them are quite large.
