Dust and gas clouds in the Milky Way

Nebulae in the Milky Way galaxy are vast clouds of gas and dust that play a crucial role in the lifecycle of stars. These astronomical objects vary in size, shape, and composition, but they share several common characteristics:

  • Composed primarily of hydrogen, helium, and trace amounts of heavier elements.
  • Often serve as stellar nurseries, where new stars are born from collapsing regions of gas and dust.
  • Exhibit a range of appearances, including emission nebulae that glow due to ionized gases, reflection nebulae that scatter starlight, and dark nebulae that obscure background stars.
  • Can span from a few light-years to hundreds of light-years in diameter.
  • Frequently associated with regions of active star formation and supernova remnants.

Nebula pictures are popular with Seestar users because they yield colorful images and some of them are quite large.
