Name
The name “El Dorado Hills” was chosen by real estate developers because they believed it captured the spirit of the Gold Rush and the miners who crossed the foothills on their way to the Mother Lode country.
El dorado means “the gilded one” or “the golden one” in Spanish. A persistent legend in Central and South America told of a king so wealthy that he had himself gilded every morning and washed off every night (so the gold wouldn’t disturb his rest). The legend inspired adventurers to search the New World for gold.
